How easy/cheap is candlemaking?

I’m planning on making gifts for my family next Christmas rather than buying, and I was wondering about making candles for one or two people. I have no idea how this works. Are there kits? Is it expensive? Is it hard? Is it practical to do for only one or two gifts?
