Why do movies, books, and songs have to be so lovey dovey and hence depressing?

It sucks that all good books, movies, and songs are about love and the fairy tale its supposed to be. It sets my hopes up for something higher than what love really is. Ex: movies: Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Twilight, Titantic, any chick flick or even rap song no joke. They give you the impression that if you’re not in love there’s something wrong with you, or that love is supposed to be perfect with great music and kissing in the sunset… How do I get over thinking that love will be like this as I know deep down it’s not going to. It just sucks as it’s hard for me not to be influenced by it and keep the bar set high. I know its silly, but its embedded into our culture. Just look at Feb 14th…. Any comments, suggestions, anything?

There are plenty of movies (and many extremely good ones, to boot) that have nothing to do with love, show a realistic pattern for it, or better yet, say that love is overrated/can be destroyed, or that even if you have a true love and a great life, terrible things like death, abandonment and insanity can happen to you.

Bear in mind that some of the films you listed are based on books from the 1800s. That was a time in which marriage (not love) pretty much was everything. The writers were trying to make the point that marriage ought to be for love and not money. (Jane Austen in particular had a thing for happy endings, and in that time and her position, well, can you blame her?) I’d say they also have some relevancy to today’s social structure. Titanic – well, my guess is they had several plotlines to work with, and star-crossed lovers are always a big hit. And Twilight is no example of a love story at all.

I realize there are other films that do glorify love or make it seem like the only thing one ought to have in life (Twilight actually does do this – “if you don’t have a soulmate, you are nothing”). However, there are others that just want to put an optimistic spin on things.

The annoying thing about romantic movies these days is that fewer and fewer of them are realistic. They are too perfect, I agree with you. And when a realistic film does indeed come around, people protest. They say that the love story was not believable because the couple was not proclaiming it every five minutes or doing amazing things to stay together. Or they say it is not a love story at all.

The sort of people who watch rom-coms and weepy romances are often looking for escapism and not realism, or at least, a heightened form of reality. I actually think that to a degree, it’s good to keep some expectations up, because it boosts self-confidence, and – well – if you don’t ask, you don’t get. If you go around thinking, “Oh, love is never going to happen for me,” it probably won’t. (That is why those “(S)he is a ______ who’s forgotten how to love… but then someone shows him/her how…” annoy me so much. One character is so freaking pessimistic for no reason (or a pathetic one), and the other is endlessly cheerful and convinced everything will be happy-ever-after.) I’m only fifteen, so I’ve never been in love, but I’m not just going to give up if I stop believing in love after a break-up or something.

So, what I’m trying to say is this: These movies aren’t meant to be realistic! Don’t set all your standards by them. That is, don’t be gloomy about it, either. Just think about what *you* imagine love to be like, ideally, and keep focused on that. It might take you a while to find an equillibrium, but you’ll get there if you remember how to keep a line between reality and fantasy.
