Candle wax how and what can I do get old wax out of my glass candle holders?

I have glass candle holders and they are thick, I cant melt the old wax off, what can I do to get rid of this old wax and what can I use in the future to make sure the wax does not stick to glass?
Couldnt really hot water crack the glass?

Set the whole thing in the freezer for a few minutes, maybe 15 or so. Then the wax will harden and you can usually chip it right out in one piece with your finger nail. I would never heat candle wax to remove. Always use ice, or the freezer. Best of luck.
